WWF-DRC supports the DRC's Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development in organising a national workshop on the Tropical Forest Financing Facility (TFFF)
COMMUNIQUE. WWF-DRC is supporting the DRC's Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development in organising a national workshop on the Tropical Forest Financing Facility (TFFF), which is taking place in Kinshasa from 19 to 21 May 2025.
Organised by the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD) in close collaboration with WWF-DRC, the workshop aims to inform participants about the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) initiative. The TFFF aims to raise $125 billion and use the fund's interest to pay High Forest Low Deforestation (HFLD) countries for their forest conservation and restoration efforts.
This multilateral fund represents a significant opportunity for the Democratic Republic of Congo to benefit from financial support to preserve its essential tropical forests, combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
It is against this backdrop that WWF, which is heavily involved in discussions on the TFFF at international level, is supporting the Congolese government in organising this exchange workshop with civil society players and other key stakeholders in the forestry sector.
The aim is to raise awareness of this initiative, promote national consultation and help to develop a common Congolese position on the TFFF initiative. Through this support, WWF-DRC is reaffirming its commitment to inclusive and sustainable forest governance, based on concrete recognition of the value of tropical forests and the essential role of communities and civil society in preserving them.
During the workshop, stakeholders will deepen their knowledge of the TFFF mechanism, discuss the Congolese government's current commitments and together develop an action plan to guide the implementation and monitoring of this initiative at national level.
Dr Etienne Longe, Country Director of WWF-DRC, said: "The Tropical Forest Financing Facility, which is an innovative mechanism, will generate new sustainable, performance-based financing and provide an incentive for tropical forest countries such as the DRC to slow down and reverse the deforestation and degradation of their natural forests. It will thus complement existing initiatives such as the REDD+ programme, by providing a concrete value for the ecosystem services provided by forests".
The results of the discussions will feed into the global launch of the TFFF planned for COP30 in Brazil in November, reinforcing the DRC's role as a key player in global forest conservation efforts.
