Holding of the 8th session of the Steering Committee of the PIREDD Equateur Programme

The Integrated REDD+ Programme in Equateur Province (PIREDD Equateur) held the 8th session of its steering committee in Mbandaka, capital of Equateur Province, on 28 March 2025.

On 28 March 2025, the Integrated REDD+ Programme in Equateur Province (PIREDD Équateur) held the 8th session of its steering committee in Mbandaka, capital of Equateur Province. This programme, implemented by the FAO with WWF as its main partner, aims to address the various drivers of deforestation and forest degradation in an integrated manner. The aim is to stabilise, or even increase, forest cover while ensuring economic growth, higher incomes and improved living conditions for local populations.

The first phase of the programme, running from 2019 to 2023, laid the foundations for resilient and sustainable development. An additional two-year phase, from 2024 to 2025, and a four-year extension will enable activities to continue until 2028. This extension is in response to requests from stakeholders and beneficiaries, making it possible to make up for the delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, extend the areas of intervention and capitalise on the experience acquired.
The 8th session of the Steering Committee focused on the presentation of the programme's extension area and the activities selected. The work plan and annual budget for 2025 were detailed for validation by the Steering Committee.

Dr Etienne Longe, National Director of WWF-DRC, expressed his satisfaction at working with the provincial government of Ecuador to ensure the success of the programme.

The programme is financially supported by the Kingdom of Sweden and the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). It is part of a global vision to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, while promoting sustainable economic development for local communities.

PIREDD Equateur contributes to several key objectives, including governance, land use planning, family planning, agriculture, forestry and energy. The activities implemented aim to reduce deforestation, promote sustainable agricultural practices and strengthen the entrepreneurship of beneficiaries.

The Integrated REDD+ Programme in the Province of Equateur represents an ambitious and promising initiative for the preservation of forests and the sustainable development of local communities. Thanks to a solid partnership and renewed commitment, this programme continues to pave the way towards a greener and more prosperous future for the Province of Equateur.
